At just 13, Liliana Mijangos is making waves in the fashion industry, drawing inspiration from her sister, Cecilia, who has special needs. Driven by the need to create stylish and accessible clothing, Liliana’s designs prioritize both functionality and flair. Reflecting on her creative journey, the influence of her move to Southern California, and the importance of balancing school, work, and personal life, Liliana shares her positive message of self-belief and limitless possibilities.

What inspired you to become a fashion designer at such a young age?
I have always loved fashion which is why I started modeling. But my main inspiration to become a fashion designer is my sister Cecilia. My sister is wheelchair bound with special needs, so it is very hard to find clothes that can easily fit her and in which she feels comfortable. So, I took it upon myself to start designing clothes that are accessible for her. Modeling at events such as NYFW and LAFW inspired my passion for fashion, and I wanted to one day showcase my designs.
What was it like growing up in Menlo Park and then moving to Anaheim? Has that change influenced your creative work in any way?
Growing up in Menlo Park was nice but it got to the point where there was not much opportunity for me to pursue my acting and modeling. There were times where I would fly to and from LA in one day and it was exhausting. After talking to my family, we felt that if this is really what I wanted to do, we would need to move to SoCal. The change has influenced my creative work because there is much more opportunity here and more support. It has helped me to go “all out” with my creations.
Fashion for people with disabilities is often overlooked. How do you approach the challenge of designing accessible fashion that is both stylish and functional?
Designing accessible fashion that is both stylish and functional does not always have to be a challenge. I try to collaborate with people with disabilities throughout the designing process. For example, my sister is wheelchair bound so instead of using buttons or a zipper in the back that can be uncomfortable, I try to use Velcro in the back or magnetic buttons in the front. Easy to open garments. And then, top it off with stylish embellishments and prints.
Your designs are not only inclusive but also innovative. Where do you find inspiration for your collections, and what’s your design process like?
I find my inspirations from everything and anything that catches my eyes. From the vibrant hues of flowers, the delicate feathers of birds, shapes of clouds, to the colors and shape of a butterfly. Once I find something that catches my eyes, I immediately draw what comes to mind. Next, I choose what type of fabric I like and then I work with my amazing grandma who helps me bring my design to life by helping me with the sewing.
You’ve managed to balance your career in both acting and fashion. How do you manage your time between school, work, and personal life?
I am currently homeschooled and am so thankful to have supportive teachers for making my balancing act of acting, modeling, and designing possible. After my schoolwork is complete for the day, I try to get out and do fun things like swimming and going to theme parks. I also really like crocheting and spending time with my family and new puppy. Weekends allow me to dive into creating as well as pursue my fabric quests. I am blessed to have an amazing family who keep me grounded and make sure I balance my school, work and personal life.
With over 500 followers on Instagram, how do you engage with your audience, and what kind of messages do you hope to spread through your social media platforms?
I love to engage with my followers. I love to hear from them and will respond to my followers. I like to show my appreciation. I always try to encourage meaningful and positive conversations. Social media is a way to build relationships, a way to connect. The message that I hope to spread through my social media is to always be yourself and believe in yourself. There is absolutely no limit to what you can do.
